For U Giancu

I've done this for Fausto, the owner of the restaurant U Giancu. It's a place near Genova where you can eat italian specialities while admiring hundreds of original comic art pieces taken from the prestigious U Giancu collection. Every inch of the restaurant's walls is filled with drawings made by people like Carl Barks, Alex Raymond, Floyd Gottfredson, Sergio Toppi, Moebius ...... along with homages form nearly all the italian comic artists.
Every year U Giancu hosts the dinner of the Rapallo international cartoonists' festival, and the U Giancu cartoonists' prize.

This young lady I've portraited is Julia, the criminologist created by Giancarlo Berardi and published by Sergio Bonelli Editore. I'm a member of the draftsmen staff since 1999.


Immagine che ho fatto per Fausto, il proprietario del "ristorante a fumetti" U Giancu. Per i pochissimi che non lo sapessero, si tratta di un locale cult nei pressi di Rapallo dove si servono prelibatezze tra pareti stracolme di opere originali provenienti dalla prestigiosa collezione omonima. Si possono ammirare disegni di artisti come Carl Barks, Alex Raymond, Floyd Gottfredson, Sergio Toppi, Moebius ...... oltre agli omaggi di svariati fumettisti nostrani.
Ogni anno il ristorante U Giancu organizza la cena che inaugura la Mostra Internazionale dei Cartoonists, quest'anno dedicata ai trent'anni di Ken Parker. Nell'edizione 2007 i premi U Giancu sono andati a Giorgio Trevisan, Maurizio Mantero e Massimo Bonfatti.

Nel disegno, Julia, la criminologa creata da Giancarlo Berardi e pubblicata dalla Bonelli, di cui sono disegnatore dal '99 (quanto tempo!).

My Toth Dells collection

Here are some silver age comics done by Alex Toth for Dell publishing. I started collecting them a couple of years ago, when I discovered that clever thing called eBay. Although I love all the Toth's long career, this period of the late 50s is my favorite, likely because on 32 pages adventures his storytelling skills really stand out, and besides his brush and pen work here is just terrific! All of them are based on movies (like "Darby O'Gill", "The FBI story", "The time machine", "Clint and Mac", or tv shows (Sea hunt, 77 sunset strip...) and it's amazing how Alex (and the writers that worked with him) translated the characters and the plot on the paper.

Durante l'ultimo viaggetto in Giappone, un pomeriggio ci siamo persi passeggiando per le strade di Ueno e siamo finiti in uno dei vari quartieri per biker smanettoni. Essendo da sempre un grande appassionato di moto sportive immaginavo di trovare chissà cosa in un posto del genere, invece, forse perchè era pomeriggio presto, la zona era quasi deserta. Comunque ci siamo divertiti ad entrare nei negozietti e comprare gadgets per gli amici motociclisti a casa.
Ma io mi aspettavo di incontrare personaggi folcloristici tipo quello qui sopra, smanettoni e tamarri, magari col culto della moto straniera... un altro stereotipo andato in fumo:)
Mi piacerebbe molto comunque, un giorno, disegnare una storia ambientata tra quelle viuzze e popolata da tipi del genere!

During our last trip to Tokyo my wife and I got lost walking around Ueno and found a large Biker district. I've always been fond of sportbikes and I always imagined how such a place in Tokyo may look like.... well it was early afternoon and the streets were almost desert... anyway it was full of accessories and wear shops, we had fun going in and out and buying some gadgets for my biker friends in Italy.
But... I expected to meet dudes like Hiro and his tuned Buell, as I've drawn back at home:)
Btw I'd really like to do a story located in such district, with characters like this one!
